NEAPOLITAN SIXTH


Ø The Neapolitan 6th chord is a chromatic, flattened supertonic chord, written in its 1st inversion and distinct in its sound.

Ø The Neapolitan 6th chord mainly comes from the second scale degree of the minor scale as a diminished chord. Having the 2nd degree lower by a semitone, it transforms into a major chord.

Ø This chord is also known as a predominant chromatic chord, and It would normally show up just before the dominant when the dominant is leading to the tonic.

Ø This chord can also be taken from a major scale using the 2nd degree, a minor chord. In this case, both the 2nd and 4th scale degree must be lower by a semitone to form a major chord.

Ø The recognition of the Neapolitan 6th chord is in 1st inversion, with scale degree four in the bass and the 2nd scale degree above the 6th  scale degree, the 2nd  scale degree is a 6th above the 4th scale degree.
