ENTRY 1 2021 INTRODUCTION TO COUNTERPOINT FIRST SPECIES COUNTERPOINT * First species counterpoint a two-voice melody with notes performing at the same time and against each other. The lower voice of the counterpoint is the cantus firmus, and it is the first voice, to begin with when arranging a first species counterpoint. * The next step is to arrange the upper melody with establishing consonant harmonic intervals of major/minor 3rd, 6th, perfect 5th, 8th and 1st. *Harmonic Intervals of 2nd, 4th, 7th, diminished and augmented can not be used. * The counterpoint can only begin with a perfect 5th or 8th and end with a major 6th, followed by a perfect 8th above the cantus firmus note. * There are different ways in which the voices can be led from one point to the other, these are parallel motion, similar motion, oblique motion and contrary motion. * In parallel motion the upper and lower voice move by the same intervals. * Similar motion have the voices moving in the same direction
